I was at a game during the Jim Nance era in the 1960s. Jim took a hand-off and broke through the line of scrimmage. He was headed for the end zone when a defensive back jumped on his back to try to tackle him. The defender had no luck and rode Jim’s back while screaming “Whoa, big fella, whoa,” right into the end zone. I met Jim Nance several years later at a high school football banquet and he mentioned this as one of his memories. Glad I heard it… twice.
